Of course, graphics alone doesn't necessary make a great game, and Castle Wolfenstein has plenty of action and adrenaline rush. There are even different graphics to depict a dead guard, a dead guard with bullet-proof vest on, and a guard shot dead at his desk. While not Earth-shattering, the graphics are more than adequate, and never gets in the way of the action. The action is viewed from an overhead perspective, with 2D graphics for the objects and characters (hence its nickname Wolfenstein 2D by Wolf 3D fans). You must escape from their castle, avoiding or killing Nazi guards along the way. As its spiritual ancestor, the game's premise will be familiar to all Wolfenstein 3D: you are an allied soldier who's been taken prisoner by the Nazis. Indeed, Castle Wolfenstein is such a veritable masterpiece that calling it "special" is a huge understatement. And if the 'fragmasters' at id acknowledge the game as their inspiration, then it must be something special, right? Apparently they liked the game so much that id negotiated a deal to reuse the name 'Wolfenstein' for their game. If the name sounds familiar to you, your hunch is correct: this is THE game that inspired id Software's blockbuster Wolfenstein 3D. Take the game as you find it and you'll still be having fun most of the time.Undoubtedly one of the best action games ever made, Muse Software's Castle Wolfenstein is a revolutionary action game that spawned a whole new genre. There are probably fixes for all of the issues I've raised in this review, but nothing in Return to Castle Wolfenstein agitated me to the point of caring to seek out mods or patches. A slightly frustrating component of the game is its tendency to use a start-of-level save instead of your latest quicksave for its automatic reload. It took me a while to adjust to the absence of an aim-down-sight ability for most weapons in the game, but as your arsenal expands you'll find something that works for your play-style. Sometimes you'll be spotted half a mile away through a dark mist sometimes the soldier you're sneaking up on will have no peripheral vision whatsoever. It's almost as if AI detection works using RNG instead of a coherent pattern. It's better to wrongly register misses than not recognise hits, I suppose! The stealth can be frustrating. Spend enough time using a sniper and you'll realise that many of the shots you clearly miss in fact hit the intended target. There's good feedback in firefights - you'll usually be able to tell whether you've hit your enemy. Certain aspects of the game's visual presentation have aged particularly well, for instance characters' faces and the weapons. The areas you occupy in-game are made more immersive through immaculate attention to detail and period-appropriate decoration. The level design is generally intuitive, and grows stronger as the game progresses.
All these years later, Return to Castle Wolfenstein offers a very fun single-player experience.
